HEIC or JPG?
HEIC stores photos at roughly half the size of JPG at similar quality, which is why Apple uses it. JPG works with virtually every device, app and website. Keep your HEIC originals if you use Apple devices, and convert copies whenever you need to share or upload. If the JPGs are too large for an upload limit, shrink them with theImage Compressor or Image Resizer.
Privacy and photo details
iPhone photos record where they were taken. The converted JPGs leave that out, along with the date and camera details, so they are safer to share. To see what an original contains first, open it in theEXIF Viewer. Live Photos convert to their still image, and portrait photos are turned the right way up automatically.

What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (or HEIF) is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default since iOS 11. It stores photos at about half the size of JPG, but Windows, Android, many apps and most websites can’t open it.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Photos are converted inside your browser, so they never leave your device. That matters for personal photos, which often include your home location.
Is the location removed?
Yes. The converted JPGs contain only the picture, without the GPS location, date and camera details stored in the original. Photos are turned the right way up before saving.
Why does the first conversion take a moment?
Chrome, Edge and Firefox can’t open HEIC themselves, so a HEIC decoder (about 700 KB) is downloaded the first time you convert. After that it’s cached and conversions are quick. Safari opens HEIC directly.
How do I stop my iPhone taking HEIC photos?
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Photos you already have stay HEIC.
