What is AVIF?
AVIF is a newer image format that can make files roughly half the size of a JPG at similar quality. Websites, streaming services and some cameras now use it. Support in other software is still patchy: many photo editors, office programs, email clients and older phones can’t open .avif files.
Browser requirements
This converter uses your browser’s own ability to read AVIF, available in current Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and in Safari 16.4 or later. If a file won’t open, update your browser and try again. HDR and 10-bit AVIF images are converted to standard 8-bit JPG, so very bright highlights may look slightly flatter.
Transparency
AVIF images can be transparent; JPG can’t. Transparent areas are filled with white, or a colour you choose in the settings.
AVIF photos are often very large in pixels. After converting, the Image Resizer can shrink them for email or upload forms, and the Image Compressor can reduce the file size further. For WebP images, use WebP to JPG.

What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is a modern image format that makes files much smaller than JPG. Websites increasingly use it, but many apps, email programs and older devices cannot open it yet.
Why does it say my browser cannot open AVIF?
Converting relies on your browser being able to read AVIF. Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari (version 16.4 or later) all can; update your browser if you see this message.
Is AVIF the same as HEIC?
No. Both are based on similar technology, but HEIC is the format iPhones use for photos, and most browsers can’t open it. To convert iPhone photos, use HEIC to JPG.
