Tip Calculator is a free tool that ends the tableside arithmetic: enter the pre-tax bill, pick a tip percent and the number of people, and everyone sees their exact share. The maths runs in whole cents in your browser, so rounding can never drift — and your bill stays private.
How to split a restaurant bill
- Enter the Bill amount before tax, as printed on the check.
- Tap a Tip percent preset or type your own — 18–20% is the safe US default.
- Set People splitting and read Each pays: the per-person share to the cent.
- Working out whether the night out fits the month? Run the bigger picture through the Paycheck Calculator before the next one.
The $84 dinner for three
An $84 check with an 18% tip adds $15.12 for a $99.12 total — $33.04 each for three people. Drop to 15% and each pays $32.20; push to 20% for great service and it is $33.60. Seeing all three numbers side by side is the whole point: generosity gets cheaper in company, and nobody has to do division after dessert.
Why cents need integer maths
Computers count in binary fractions, so a naive tip calculation can land a cent off — the classic $0.01 drift that makes shares not add up. This tool converts everything to whole cents first, the way a till does, so the total is always exact and only uneven per-person splits round, by at most a cent each.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the US, 15–20% at table-service restaurants is the norm, 20–25% for great service; tip on the pre-tax amount. Customs differ elsewhere — 5–10% or rounding up is common across much of Europe.
Why does the per-person share not multiply back exactly?
Cents cannot always divide evenly: $12 across uneven shares rounds each person to the nearest cent, so the rounded shares can differ from the total by a cent. The total here is always exact.
Is my bill total uploaded?
No. The bill, tip and party size stay in the input boxes: everything is calculated in your browser and gone when you close the page.
