Paycheck Calculator is a free tool that estimates US take-home pay after federal income tax, FICA payroll tax and state income tax. Pick a state preset or type your own effective rate, choose weekly, bi-weekly or monthly pay, and see every deduction. All maths happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How to estimate take-home pay
- Enter your Gross salary per year and your Filing status.
- Choose Pay frequency and your State, then adjust the State rate if you know it.
- Add yearly Pre-tax deductions such as 401(k) or HSA contributions.
- Read Net per paycheck, or use the reverse box to solve for the gross behind a target net.
Why Texas keeps more than California on $100,000
Federal and FICA take roughly the same bite everywhere — about $21,000 on a $100,000 single salary in these estimates. The gap is the state line: near zero in Texas, Florida and six other states, versus an effective 5–6% in California and New York. That single dropdown can be worth $500 a month on identical pay.
From paycheck to house budget
Lenders cap housing around 28% of gross monthly income, but life runs on net pay. Take the yearly net figure above into the Mortgage Calculator to test whether the total payment with tax and insurance actually fits what lands in your account.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this paycheck estimate?
It is a planning estimate using 2025 federal brackets and the standard deduction, FICA rules and a flat effective state rate you can adjust. Real withholding depends on your W-4, pre-tax benefits and state tables.
Which states have no income tax on wages?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. There your deductions are federal and FICA only, which the presets reflect.
Does it handle overtime or bonuses?
Convert them to an equivalent annual figure first: divide a weekly overtime average by 52 into the salary box. Bonuses are federally withheld at a flat 22%, so treat them separately.
What is the reverse calculation?
Enter the annual take-home you need and it solves for the gross salary that funds it under the same tax assumptions — useful for salary negotiations.
