Wi-Fi File & Text Transfer

Send a file or text directly to another device on the same Wi-Fi, with manual pairing codes and no upload server.

Sent only where you point it

Your content is sent straight from your browser to the address you enter, and nowhere else. Nothing passes through our servers, and nothing is saved: closing the page forgets it. How this works

Direct transfer. No upload server.

Both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi. Open this page on each device and exchange the connection codes privately, then send text or a file. No IP address is needed to try pairing. Only the paired device receives your content.

Keep both pages open and screens awake. Guest Wi-Fi, VPNs or browser privacy settings may block local connections.

Not connected

1. Pair the devices

On the sending device, create a connection code. On the receiving device, paste that code below.

On the receiving device

Connection troubleshooting (optional)

Try the connection codes first. If pairing fails, some browsers may not resolve the other device’s local address. Reset both pages, then optionally enter each device’s own private IPv4 address from its Wi-Fi settings before creating new codes.

Use the device’s address, not the router’s. This is only a fallback; it cannot bypass guest-network isolation or a VPN.

Wi-Fi File & Text Transfer is a free tool that sends content directly between two browsers on a local network. Use it to move a document from a computer to a phone, or copy a note between devices. Wi-Fi file transfer happens over an encrypted peer connection. Selecting a file does not upload it to UtilTray, and there is no cloud inbox.

How to transfer a file or text over Wi-Fi

  1. Open this page on both devices and connect them to the same Wi-Fi. No IP address is required to try pairing.
  2. On the sender, select Create connection code and share the complete code privately.
  3. On the receiver, paste it and select Create response code. Return that response to the sender.
  4. On the sender, paste the response and select Connect devices. Then use Send text or Send file.
  5. On the other device, select Accept transfer, then copy the text or Save received file.

What the connection codes do

The two long codes exchange temporary WebRTC connection details. They contain no file contents, but can include network addresses and session information, so share them only with the intended recipient. They are not short room numbers, reusable download links or passwords. Both original pages must remain open. Once connected, either device can send. Select Reset / disconnect to close the connection and clear the page.

Direct transfer, with practical limits

There is no discovery service or server relay. This avoids sending your content through a third party, but means a router that isolates devices can block transfer. If pairing stalls, check guest Wi-Fi settings, keep both screens awake, and check whether a VPN blocks local traffic. If browser address resolution fails, reset both pages and open Connection troubleshooting (optional). You can enter each device’s own private IPv4 address from its Wi-Fi settings before generating new codes. This fallback does not bypass network isolation. After both pages load, the internet connection is not required for the transfer itself; the local network still is.

Files are limited to 100 MiB, and text to 1 MiB. Each transfer requires the recipient’s acceptance. Files are received into memory and saved only when you choose; nothing is opened automatically. Only the latest received item is kept, so save it before accepting the next. Transferred files can still be unsafe: the tool does not scan them for malware. Use File Checksum to compare a file with a trusted checksum when needed.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to UtilTray?

No. You choose a file locally, and an encrypted WebRTC data channel carries it directly to the paired device. There is no signaling, STUN, TURN or upload server; connection details are exchanged manually.

Do both devices need the same Wi-Fi?

Use the same local network. Guest networks, device isolation, VPNs and some browser privacy settings can prevent direct connections even on the same Wi-Fi. This tool has no internet relay fallback.

Why do I need to exchange two connection codes?

Browsers cannot automatically discover each other here. The sender creates an offer and the receiver returns an answer. You can try pairing without entering an IP address. Manual exchange avoids a server that would otherwise coordinate the connection.

Can I transfer between a phone and a computer?

Yes, if both browsers support WebRTC data channels and can reach each other locally. Keep both pages open and the phone awake. Camera access is not required; this version uses copy-and-paste codes.

What are the size limits?

Send one file up to 100 MiB or text up to 1 MiB at a time. The receiver holds the complete item in browser memory, so small files are best on phones. Save each received item before receiving the next.

Does it work without an internet connection?

After both pages load, pairing and transfer need only a working local network. You still need a way to exchange the codes, and browser or router restrictions may block the connection.
